One Added Pass

I knew from the previous post that I hadn't quite gotten what I was after but I as so excited I posted all the previous steps earlier this morning.

I looked carefully and decided to pump up the darks and the lights one more time
Here is what the palette looked like for his step  ....

Just one dark value and one mid-tone added carefully. I stayed with the original value plan. The steps were all in place.
Oh gosh I hope this makes sense.

How to Paint a Rose ..Step by Step ....( showing everything)

Many people have written to me about flower painting and I think I can break it down fairly well. Here is my attempt to do so. First draw the flower . This photograph is from the Morgue File. This is a place where you can get photographs to work from that are placed there for this purpose.

Now lets look at one more thing before we start the journey....
We are going to paint the rose on the right but I also think you might want to start out with painting the rose on the left. The one on the left uses one dark( red) and one mid-tone ( orange). The white of the paper represents the lightest value. So this is a painting using three values . Big strokes and not fussing.

Now back to the rose on the right.

After the drawing I mixed two dark colors on my palette the red and purple on the right and four lighter colors on the left.
You could draw a line between the two sides if that helps you remember which side has your darks and which side has your lights .

Using the two dark puddles I placed in the darkest patterns I saw in the rose.
Here are the puddles I used.

OK . Now lets move on to the mid-tones or the lighter puddles I mixed.

These are the puddles I am referring to.
Now lets put them on the painting.
We are getting somewhere now. But things are a little washed out. I like the decisions I made but I need to bump up the color with a red wash in the mid tones. But I can not ..I repeat I can not go into the darks at this time. Do not cross that imaginary line.

Better....This is what you palette should look like at this time. The colors should be separate If you have a muddy mess, that is not good.

Now clean off the palette and lets mix some greens for the background

Again separate your puddles. My dark which is nearly gone on the right was a mixture of red and green together to make a brown. If you use complimentary colors and mix your neutrals your painting will be more cohesive.

The greens are in . I like this but I am going to hit the painting with some darker spots later. I need to decide what to do. I will let you know. I hope this helps.
More later..

When to be you ?

Open Rose
watercolor
7.9x7.9 inches
This is an example of artists teaching artists. I did the first rose and knew I had the values correct but it felt heavy handed and not what I wanted in a rose form. So I thought what would Kaethe Bealer do? I decided to pretend I was her . And I am really pleased with my second attempt. I feel like I was in her head making deliberate decisions. So my art hint of the day is "be you " but also know "when not to be you".

Peony Depth

Peony Depth
watercolor
7.9x7.9
matted 12x12 inches

This one was a "waskaly wabbit". Finding the value shapes and temperature as the layers overlapped was a challenge. I could have gone toward neutrals but I have painted long enough to know the out come of that would have been "blah"
So we get this guy. Surprise! Peony Depth

A large peony step by step

A Large Peony
watercolor
18x24 inches
This is the step for how to paint this big one

Step one...find the effect. The patterns that glow inside the form

Step 2...find all the mid-tone patterns ....Knowing this is going to be darkened in the next step. Keep the glow using complimentary colors of yellow and lilac. Simplify forms find patterns.

Step 3. Not bad but lacks punch. Find the darkest patterns and use blue and red washes to create interlocking patterns. Stay big here no fussiness allowed.

The Picket Fence Challenge Step by Step

The Picket Fence Challenge
watercolor
7x10 inches

Here are the steps for building this painting.

Step one ...find the pattern of the darkest elements through out the picture. Paint those patterns.

Step two...continue establishing the next value shapes making sure nothing is as dark as what was used in step one.

Step three. Time for mid-tones. All those colors that are medium in value. Again keep the original patterns from step one and step two in place. Do not violate the rules. Make many test dabs before applying paint.

Step Four...almost there but things are a little spotty. Add layers of wash to unite and pump up the color a bit.

Step Five. I thought I was done here but I felt that I could put more color on the car and in the shadow shapes. It was fine but felt a little washed out. I want to make the color as saturated as possible without dulling it down. I little goes a long way here.

Finding the Effect

Finding the Effect
18x24 watercolor

I don't remember where I read it but an artist wrote about finding the effect. The thing that creates the glow in a picture. Everything then flows from that spot. I am not sure I understand the concept but that is what I am doing here. I painted the glow first.

I used flat sable brushes sizes 16 and 1 inch.
I think to work bigger I need to purchase bigger brushes. These are loaded with pigment but I think bigger brush could give me more power.

Going Big

I am painting big these days. I am painting on the largest watercolor block . It is 18x24 inches.
This has been a goal of mine for some time. I want to fill my studio with these large peony pieces and bask in their colorful shapes and edges.
